Starting this Saturday 26th June the INTERMEDIATE Juniors start time will be moved from 11.30 to a new start time of 9.30. This will be followed by Juniors Beginners at 10.30 – 11.30 (no change) and Racketball beginners will then be at at 11.30 – 12.30. There is no advanced Racketball at the moment.
Would parents of any Juniors or Racketball players who are thinking of starting on Saturday mornings FOR THE FIRST TIME please phone Leckie Dow beforehand on 07773 347541 so that registration can be carried out in advance.
Stamford Squash Club No.1 Spencer ‘Bez’ Beresford also plays for the RAF squash team, and on a recent tour to Hong Kong bumped into none other than the legendary ex-Stamford player Mike Ferriera, now moved on from New York and living and working in Honkers.
The RAF Team (which also included yet another ex-Stamford player, now moved to Anglesey, Glynn Williams) played against local clubs including the Hong Kong Football Club, Hong Kong Cricket Club, Kowloon Cricket Club, Hong Kong Squash Centre and the Ladies Recreational Club (LRC) where Bez played Mike (losing 3-0).
To mark the fixture, Bez bravely asked for, and received, dispensation to play in the Stamford strip pictured here, rather than the RAF Team strip, for that match. It may not have helped him win, but he would certainly have looked good.

Finals Day 2010 took place on Saturday 20th March at Stamford Squash Club.
Players turning up early (11.30) for the COPPERSTORE open handicap included Peter Hand, Martin Page, Leo Guilliano, Leigh Johnson, Dave Batterbee, Eamonn Treanor and Martin Shippey.

Bez Beresford, Asia Rdzawska, Tony Shilling

Carole & Leo Guilliano
There were some surprising scores – Peter Hand failing to break into positive numbers against Leo Guilliano being a prime example, but rumours (vigorously and repeatedly asserted by Leigh Johnson) that money had changed hands in the handicap setting carried out by Maurice Mosdell were strenuously denied by Martin Shippey (although he did go on to win, so he would wouldn’t he?).
Martin remained unbeaten throughout the competition, and Maurice still maintains that the large number of banknotes that he was later seen handing over the counter at Barclays was nothing to do with the competition and would only be ‘resting’ in his account.

Sarah Kirby, Leigh Johnson
The remaining Finals (winners can be found here) were efficiently organised and overseen by Maurice Mosdell, with hardly any controversy whatsoever, apart from when, in the Joseph Cup Final being played by Simon Barker and Mark Davies, a ball which was clearly seen by several onlookers to hit the wall a good foot outside the out of court line, bounce off a light fitting and land back in the court after hitting a spectator on the balcony was confidently ruled ‘in’ by Maurice, who later at the squash Club Dinner, after taking some refreshment, admitted he might possibly have been distracted at the time.
On a more serious note, I’d like to thank all those who took part in the competition for their time and enthusiasm, all those who organised the competitions and especially Maurice Mosdell for organising the whole of Finals Day, including the refreshments.

The Club is currently looking at the possibility of funding a squash clinic for the more novice & newer Club Members in the very near future.

Court 4 having been completely refurbished with new floor, re-plastered front wall and all walls painted, we now eagerly await the refurbishment of courts 2 and 3.
This is anticipated to be carried out this weekend by Wearwell, and is being financed out of club funds (court 4 being financed by the school).
In this instance, the floors will be sanded, rather than replaced, and the side and back walls painted, the front walls still being in very good condition.
This will give the club (and the schoolboys) four courts in top condition on which to play.
The floors and walls will now ‘play’ properly – ie the ball will be ‘gripped’ by the walls and floors and bounce properly instead of skidding.
Members can help keep the courts in good condition by:
Not wearing shoes which mark the floor (proper ‘court shoes’ should always be worn for safety in any case)
Not entering the courts with shoes which are carrying mud or grit from outside use
(If, on entering the court to play, the floor has been contaminated by previous users who have not observed the above guidance, before playing, SWEEP THE FLOOR using the bristle brush provided (not the blue fluffy one). Playing on the floor while it is covered in grit is dangerous and damages the floor further).
Not using dark protective tape on racket heads which marks the walls
By following the above guidance we’ll keep the courts in good playing condition for many years.
COURT TIMINGS
Following the school’s ruling that club members may not enter the courts during school hours (8.30 – 5.30), we changed the court timings so that all courts commenced at 5.40, to allow for changing time.
Some members have said that having all courts commencing at 5.40 creates jams in the changing rooms.
Has this been a problem for you? If you’d like the club committee to look again at court timings please register your view here.
Recent injuries means Tania starts the year in the snow ranked 20th in the World Rankings.
