Yorkshire’s Jenny Tranfield provided the only shock in the women’s first round, outlasting Tania Bailey and clinching the fifth set 9/7 after 84 minutes. It wasn’t subtle squash, with Tania clearly not yet back to match-fitness slugging it out with the dogged Tranfield, but it was an enthralling and entertaining match. The scoreline: 9/5, 5/9, 10/9, 4/9, 9/7
Tania was beaten 9-4, 4-9, 0-9, 9-1, 10-8 by 16-year-old Egyptian qualifier Omneya Abdel Kawy in New York at the TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS.
As quoted in the local paper, Tania aims to be back on court in the New Year and pushing for a place in the England team for the COMMONWEALTH GAMES in Manchester. She said: ‘I have been in rehab at Lilleshall most of the time and I need to get myself fit because I have done no court work in the last four months.’
‘Hopefully in a couple of weeks’ time I can start training again. My ranking has gone down and it will probably get a bit lower.’
‘But I am confident I can get back into the top five and make the Commonwealth Games team.’
Highlight of 2001 was reaching a final in New York and achieving her highest world ranking of five.
England’s Tania Bailey retains her No1 position in the Women’s U-23 World Squash Rankings, published 2nd November by the Women’s International Squash Players’ Association (WISPA).
The 22-year-old former world junior champion from Stamford in Lincolnshire has maintained this status in the new U-23 ranking list, which is published every four months, despite being sidelined until the New Year following recent knee surgery.

Although Tania only started to play when she was aged nine, she had a very successful junior career having played representatively 22 times and won the European and British Junior titles.
She had planned to go to university, but a trip to Rio de Janeiro in 1997 led to her returning home as World Junior Champion and her thoughts moved to a professional career.
She has played consistently well to climb up the rankings into the top 10. Cassie Jackman was the player she had looked up to, but now has joined her as part of the top flight.
The girl who had been a county athlete and netball player now has ambitions to be the best player in the world.
As she has already become an established international she is making great progress towards her goals.
