Junior Squash Tournament

Stamford Squash Club hosted a triangular junior squash tournament, with teams from Stamford, Hunts County and Peterborough on Saturday 28th July, there was a brilliant turn out and all the players enjoyed the day. There was a great atmosphere in the club and it was an extremely close contest with many matches going to the wire. Stamford brought 7 players, as did Hunts county and Peterborough had 6, the ages ranged from as young as 6 up to 16, all players gave 100% effort and all matches were played in a great spirit. The tournament was organised by former World ranked player and now Regional Coach Tania Bailey.

The number 1 players were first on, Emily Fuller (Hunts) against Emma Barnard (Stamford), they have both represented their county numerous times and are old adversaries on this occasion, Emily won 3.0 but the match was closely fought and the second game had to be decided on a tie breaker. Ed Nation (Stamford) was on next against against Simon Carter (Hunts), this match was 45 minutes and both players worked really hard, Simon took the first game but then Ed came back really strongly to win 3.1. Other notable matches were between Luc Schoutsen (Stamford) and Luke Halliwell (Hunts), this was a see saw encounter with Luke taking a 1.0 lead and Luc pulling it back to 2.1 before Luke leveled at 2.2, the final game was neck and neck all way and Luc took the final 2 points to win 13.11 in the 5th game. Jack Richardson ( Stamford) and Darcie Mounter (Hunts) played a high quality match which was thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd, Darcie took a 2.0 lead before Jack came back to level at 2.2 and Darcie won 11.9 in the 5th game. Alex Swanston (Stamford) beat Joe Cox (Hunts) 3.0, on paper this match looked to be a really close encounter but Alex dominated throughout and played really well. Alex’s sister Catherine then played against Ellie Burgess, a strong player from Hunts and after losing the first game she came back to take the next 3 games and the match 3.1. Ward Schoutsen ( Stamford) also came back from a game down to beat Oscar Mitchell (Hunts) 3.1. Alexander (Peterborough) and Tim Nation (Stamford) then had an exciting 3.2 in the final match of day. The overall match score was 6 to Stamford, 6 to Hunts and 2 to Peterbourgh.

At the end of the match a trophy was presented to the best performance of the day, this went to Jack Richardson who has had little previous match experience but fought hard against a current nationally ranked player. 5 medals were then given out to other notable performances, effort levels and overall attitude, Darcie Mounter, Luke Halliwell, Luc Schoutsen, Matthew Hand and Amelia. Although every single player on the day deserved a medal! Everyone looks forward to the return match in a few months’ time.

Once the junior match had finished everyone was treated to an exhibition from Club Coach Dan Mcginn and Club number 1 and Combined Services player Bez Beresford, Dan took the match 3.0 but it was a very exiting contest with really long rallies. It was very inspiring for the juniors and the parents to see, both players were using all the corners of the court, hitting the ball with a variation of power and finesse and the retrieving was fantastic.

All in all it was a great day and it was brilliant to see the club buzzing with lots of junior players throughout the afternoon.
